The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word deepavali, meaning "rows of lighted lamps".
Houses, shops and public places are decorated with diyas, candles and shimmering lights. People also enjoy fireworks, perform Puja ceremonies, make colorful Rangolis outside their homes, buy new clothes, savor sweets and gourmet meals. In short, it is a time to rejoice with family and friends.
